How long until I reach my savings goal?

Enter your starting balance, monthly contribution, and interest rate to see the exact month — and calendar date — you cross your goal.

At $500/month with a $5,000 head start and a 4.5% APY, a $20,000 goal takes about 28 months (2 years, 4 months) under monthly compounding. Change any number below and the exact month recalculates instantly — including an optional inflation adjustment so you know what your goal is worth in today's dollars.

Frequently asked questions

How is the savings goal timeline calculated?

We solve for the number of months where your starting balance plus monthly contributions, growing with monthly-compounded interest at your entered rate, first reaches your goal. Each month your balance is multiplied by (1 + monthly rate) and then your contribution is added — the same math a savings or money-market account actually uses — so the month count reflects true compounding, not a straight-line estimate.

What happens if I'm not adding any monthly contribution?

If you leave the monthly contribution at zero, your balance still grows from interest alone, just slower — the calculator solves for how many months of pure compounding it takes to reach your goal. If your interest rate is also zero and your balance is below your goal, it will never get there on its own, and we show a banner explaining that instead of a broken result.

Does this account for inflation?

Only if you turn it on. Checking "Adjust for inflation" swaps in a real (inflation-adjusted) monthly rate — your nominal APY minus the eroding effect of your entered inflation rate — so the month count tells you when your goal is reached in today's purchasing power, not just in raw dollars. It defaults to 2.5% inflation, which you can edit.

What if I already have more saved than my goal?

If your current balance already meets or exceeds your goal, the calculator skips the math entirely and shows an instant success message — you're already there, zero months to go.

Is my financial information stored anywhere?

No. Every number you type stays in your browser. The calculation runs entirely client-side in JavaScript — nothing is sent to a server, logged, or saved, unless you choose to copy the share link, which only encodes your inputs in the URL itself.
